Insurrectionary Weimar: The German Crisis of 1923

Mike Balay continues his series on how World War I continues to shape the foundations of the modern world. In early 1923, a French foreign policy initiative kicked off a financial crisis in Germany which revealed the fragility of the post-imperial regime. The crisis left behind a frightened and traumatized society. The center held—barely—but Weimar's legitimacy deficit foreshadowed its ultimate failure.
